Otodus is an extinct genus of mackerel shark which lived from the Paleocene to the Pliocene epoch. The name Otodus comes from Ancient Greek ὠτ and ὀδούς – thus, "ear-shaped tooth".

Otodus lived during the Paleocene and Eocene epochs, approximately 60 to 45 million years ago. Though large (up to 3 Inch+), high quality fossil shark teeth are still uncommon finds.

The shark tooth symbolism in mythology speaks of strength and potency. It is a masculine symbol worn by warriors. In Hawaiian culture, sharks are associated with the gods, and the shark tooth meaning is of a charm used for protection.
